  1. 1632-1675. Dutch painter, active in Delft.
  2. Most of his pictures are genre scenes, with a
  3. limpid clarity and distinct air of stillness,
  4. and a harmonious palette often focusing on
  5. yellow and blue. He frequently depicted
  6. solitary women in domestic settings, as in
  7. The Lacemaker (Louvre, Paris). Vermeer is
  8. thought to have spent his whole life in
  9. Delft. There are only 35 paintings ascribed
  10. to him. His work fell into obscurity until
  11. the mid- to late 19th century, but he is now
  12. ranked as one of the greatest Dutch artists.
  13. In addition to genre scenes, his work
  14. comprises one religious painting, a few
  15. portraits, and two townscapes, of which the
  16. fresh and naturalistic View of Delft about
  17. 1660 (Mauritshuis, The Hague) triggered the
  18. revival of interest in Vermeer. The Artist's
  19. Studio, about 1665-70 (Kunsthistorisches
  20. Museum, Vienna), is one of his most elaborate
  21. compositions; the subject appears to be
  22. allegorical, but the exact meaning remains a
  23. mystery.
